2012 Kearns Midget Highlights

I can't say enough how proud I am of this team and the coaching staff. Over the past 4 years we've gone 50-2 and have won 4 championships in a row. We've done it with class on the field, always emphasizing respecting the game. Enjoy these highlights and share them with your family and friends.

Enjoy your off season. Remember to make school a high priority, to respect your parents, and to be an athlete, not a jock. Love you guys.

Football banquet date set

The banquet will be on Thursday, December 6th from 6pm to 9pm at the LDS Chapel located at 5900 S. 4000 W. Food will be a pot-luck style, so please watch for texts from Christina about food assignments. All members of your families are invited along with anyone else that was supportive of our team this season. Please remember to bring enough food to support those you bring with you :-).

I'm working on the highlight DVD for this season and I'm really excited about its potential. I hope you all are enjoying your free time and best of luck to any of you that are playing other sports during the football off-season.

Remember to represent your team and family well in all you do, be an Anti-bully, and most of all, treat your mothers (and girls) with respect! I love you guys. Can't wait to see you all at the banquet and to get started on next season!

Kearns 13, Stansbury 0

11-0 on the season. 48-1 over the past 4 seasons. I cannot say how proud I am of you all for accomplishing this. You all did an amazing job and you all make coaching so easy because of how hard you all work and prepare for big games like these.

Forgive me if I'm repeating a story (because I can't remember if I told you guys this after the game when I was so excited from the win), but last night I had a dream of this exact outcome for us (13-0). It was so real that when I woke up, I thought we had actually won, then I realized I had a game to wake up and coach.

This season was special in many ways. First, we welcomed some new players to our team in Journey, Marcel, and Alfredo. Second, we implemented both a new offense and a new defense, all of which created many challenges. Most teams would show signs of struggle with losses. At times we did struggle, but we fought through it and never lost. Great job boys!

Kearns 14, East 0 (Patriot Division Playoffs)

Great win in a tough game vs a very good team. Turnovers and sustaining blocks were a big problem for us and something we need to fix in order to have a good game for the championships.

We are proud of you for making it this far. Let's stay focused on beating Stansbury for the championship game. Take some time to watch the highlights against them (you can view them here) and focus on what we did right in order to beat them.

Go Cougars!

Kearns 42, Viewmont 7

Awesome win over a good Viewmont team. Their defense was actually very tough. We still have things to correct if we want to continue to play this way during the post season. Come out to practice ready to work hard to beat East in the first round.

Stats are updated on the right hand side.

Kearns 29, Stansbury 6

This was a very big win over a very good team in Stansbury. We still have things to work on because we struggled with moving the ball on offense at times and covering the pass on defense, but the good thing is that we have film on them now and we can see what we need to fix.

We fully expect to see them again in the championship game,  so we'll be ready again.

Us coaches are very proud of you guys and how well you play together as a team. Keep working hard preparing mentally and physically. We love you guys.

All stats are updated on the right hand side. See you at practice on Monday.

Kearns 60, Murray 0

I'm proud of all of you for how hard you worked, how much you supported each other, and how un-selfishly you played. What an awesome game. I'm not a fan of "running up the score", but I really felt like this was not the case when it's evident that 8 different kids scored a touchdown and we were able to get every kid that can carry the football, at least 1 carry. Even our starters only got 1 carry each and they un-selfishly begged to stay in the game only to block, not carry the football.

Stats are updated. We move on to a HUGE game against Stansbury next week. You all have been preparing for this game and you know how big this game is and I have every confidence that you will be up for this game and take this challenge into your own hands and play the best game yet. I'm very excited for you all.

Kearns 33, East 0

Awesome job guys. You played a really good team and never let up. We had a couple of times where their offense was moving the ball, but you clamped down and played great defense. Still some work to do to play our best game, but I couldn't be more proud of you all.

Opponent break down: East

I've broken down East's offense from their first game of the season against Hunter. They beat Hunter 20-6. Hunter is a really good team, so that tells us that East is good. Do not underestimate them one bit. They are tough and physical and they really want to beat us badly.

East Offense - They use a double tight, I-formation offense with a wing back. The wing back (#27) is a dangerous runner. He's fast in open-field and has great break-away speed. They will wear us out with their tailback (#22) runs, then give it to #27 on a counter or reverse, so we have to make sure we're staying home. Their best OL is #74. He's big and physical. The only other formation we've seen from the video is #27 lining up wide and almost every time he did that they either passed or ran a sweep to that side. They have one time when they run a shotgun/trips look, but that play didn't work so well for them.

Since this is their first game, I'm sure they have added more to their offense since then, so we must be prepared for anything else.

One last bit of warning: They have had players kicked out of games for starting fights. DO NOT GET INVOLVED. Stay way from fights or getting personal with them. Just play your game and hit them legally when the ball is snapped.

Kearns 41, Tooele 0

Awesome job boys. Very proud of how you played. Still a few things to work on to play our best game ever and we expect it to happen against East. Please be at EVERY practice this week to help your team prepare. This is a big game and we need you mentally up and emotionally prepared to play in this big game.

All stats are updated.

Kearns 32, Alta A-2 7

Another great win against a really good team. We started off slow and they gave us fits at times, but you guys pulled together and showed them what you were made of. Very proud of you for the goal line stand and for putting together a 78 yard TD drive.

All stats are updated.

Kearns vs Bountiful Offensive play critique

I've been trying to think of a way that I could meet with you guys outside of practice to review film of our games. I think film is extremely important in learning from our mistakes. A fellow coach-friend of mine introduced me to this app called "Coaches Eye", which allows me to talk over the video and draw on the video while I'm talking.

Since I'm the offensive coordinator I'm going to focus on what we need to do to fix parts of our offense. I'll have both positive and negative comments regarding our performance. Don't mistake the word "negative" for "mean". We all need to learn from mistakes and when they're pointed out it's the best way to learn.

Please take 20 minutes of your time to watch this video of our offensive plays against Bountiful and come to practice on Wednesday prepared to review and make better on our mistakes. If you have any questions on my comments, please bring them to practice.

Kearns 48, Bountiful 6

Kind of a rough start with exchanging kickoff returns for TD's, but you guys settled down and played great football the rest of the game. I can't remember every coaching in a game where we returned a Kickoff and  punt for  TD and also returned an interception for a TD, PLUS got a blocked punt. Awesome performance. Let's keep the momentum and the intensity and bring it into next weeks big game against Alta A-2.

Kearns 34, Highland 0

Highlights from our 34-0 win over Highland. We played a pretty good game, but we need to have more intensity before and during the game, especially coming out at halftime. We had a lot of penalties but after reviewing film some of them were pretty bad calls (maybe mercy calls from the refs?) Either way; some were warranted.

All stats are updated on the right hand side link.

Sunday, September 2, 2012

Kearns 39, Herriman 0

As we told you before, it was nice to get the win and at times we looked really good, but other times we looked sloppy. Too many turnovers and too any penalties.

Statistics are updated on the right hand side of the page.

Monday practice is canceled so we will see you wednesday. Let's beat Highland!!

Monday, August 27, 2012

Kearns 21, Bingham 7

You guys played an amazing game and could not have played more perfect. Turnovers were the name of the game. We gave up one on a 4th down conversion but Bingham gave up 4 (two interceptions and one on 4th down). Enjoy these highlights from the game. All stats are updated on the right hand side.
