2013 Mesquite tournament highlights

Even though the weather wasn't ideal, I still had a blast watching you guys close out your season and end it on a high note. I'm so proud of you all and all you've accomplished over the years. My blog will continue to stay up so if you're ever feeling nostalgic, stop on by and look up a piece of your history.

All stats for the season are finished and available in the link on the right hand side.

Team documentary

Parents/Players: I'm going to do a short little documentary on the past 5 years being champions and I want to interview each of the boys while we're down at the tournament (on camera); this includes boys that have only been on the team a short time. I will be asking the following questions and I want your boys to be prepared with a response to each. Have them ponder the questions and be ready when I ask them. We'll be setting up a canopy down at the fields and I'll interview inside the the canopy.

Here are the questions:

- Earliest memory of playing little league football (who was it for)
- Favorite win (who was it, why was it your favorite)
- Favorite personal moment playing football (what about it made it your favorite)
- Favorite offensive play to run (why)
- Toughest win (why)
- Toughest loss (why)
- What will you miss the most about playing in little league
- What did you learn from being on this team that you think will help you playing high school football
- How does it feel to be a part of this team with the tradition we have
- What helped you be so successful
- 1-2 most important lessons you learned from playing football on this team

If you need a reference to past seasons (I know our memories can all be short), check out the links on the right side of this page that show the past season game scores and stats. You can go further into previous years and find highlights from each game every year back to 2009.

I'll text you all when we're down there to see when we can do your interviews. It will likely take 5-10 minutes.

Kearns 15, Jordan 14 (National Division Championship)

I know like most of you, I'm still on the high of winning this huge game today. So much adversity has plagued us this season but we continued to fight on.

I'm so thankful to be able to coach you all and I'm excited to see how you guys progress at the high school level. Remember how it felt today to win this game and how you never quit and never get your heads down. You're going to be in the same situation many times in your life; always look back to this day.

Thank you so much to all of the parents and their families for coming to support us. Thank you to all the coaches for the hard work. Thank you to coach Rickards for his commitment to providing support and being at all of our games.

I got goose bumps at the end when I was putting this video together. I hope you all enjoy!

Kearns offense vs Jordan

Please take time to watch this video and become more familiar with the Jordan Defense vs our Offense. Note some of the changes we have to make in order to execute our offense better against them. Watch this video as much as you have time to do; REPETITION IS THE KEY TO ALL LEARNING.

Kearns 28, West Jordan 18 (National Conference Playoffs)

A little closer than we would like the score to be, but I think we played a really good team in West Jordan. Those guys fought so hard and were devastated when they lost, which means they were giving it their all.

We have one more regular season game to go and that is the championship game against Jordan at Jordan's home field. Jordan will be a real challenge because they have a new QB that looks even better than their original starter (one of the twins, #9). Come to practice ready to work hard and be prepared to beat Jordan.

Enjoy these highlights from our game; season stats are updated on the link to the right.

Kearns 34, Brighton 6

What a great way to close out the season by a good convincing win over Brighton. I'm proud of you all for working so hard, but the work is not over. Now it's time to really up our work during practice and be mentally ready for our opponents during the playoffs and championship games. We MUST be up for these games and maintain intensity through out our games from beginning to end.

Kearns 34, Woods Cross 13

We played a great complete game. Woods Cross is a very good team and we forced key turnovers at times against their offense, and we executed our offense the way we were supposed to. We will be preparing for our game against Brighton this week, as well as some prep for our playoffs. Remember to keep icing any injuries you may have; our team is getting thinner and thinner each week.

Stats are updated on the right hand side link.

Kearns 21, Jordan 20

What a great game played against a great team. We put ourselves in a tight situation and came out victorious. Plenty of things to work on still to prepare when we see them again, but enjoy the win and how good it feels.

Jordan vs Olympus

Here are videos of a different look showing Jordan vs Olympus. They passed all over olympus, often scoring in one play as soon as they got the ball. Our DB's have to be on their A-game this week, paying close attention to their routes and the match ups you'll be facing. All of their receivers are potential for a TD because they're all tall, fast, and they catch everything within reach. Remember DB's, if you're beat, I'd rather you get a pass interference call than allow a TD.

Watch these videos as much as you can. Also take note to listen to some of the QB's hot calls for changing the plays up.

Scouting Jordan vs Bingham

Take time to watch these videos as much as possible. I've broken down their passing offense and their rushing offense. I would expect they've put more plays in since this game and we'll do our best to prepare you for that as well. Watch these videos as much as possible.

Kearns 54, Olympus 14

You all did an awesome job despite how injured and banged up we all are. I can't say how proud I am of you all for digging in and playing some great football.

We will have to work twice as hard preparing for Jordan this week. They are a much better team and will be tough. Watch the videos I've posted of them and STUDY them. Know them.

In the mean time, enjoy this highlight video of the game.

Olympus scouting

Please watch the following videos to scout out what you will see vs Olympus. The more times you see it, the more it will be familiar to you when you play them. Olympus is in Green. This is their game this year vs Alta.

Their QB #15 is left handed and he likes to throw to his left a lot as well as to the TE crossing the field. We must keep him in the pocket.

Inside LB's need to make sure the QB does not run the ball up the middle after they fake the sweep. Inside backers stay home, outside backers pursue the sweep as it comes your way.

Kearns 40, West Jordan 13

Awesome win. This time we relied more on the pass and we took what the defense was giving us.

We had some pretty bad injuries to the team, so please do your best to call and/or talk to your team mate Jake Proctor and give him your best. Jake was lost for the season due to a fracture in his leg and I know he's hurting. Jake actually played the entire first half of the game with the leg fracture, which speaks to his toughness. We should all keep Jake in our thoughts the next time we're hurting and realize if he can play an entire half of a game with a leg fracture, we can fight through other small injuries. We'll miss you badly Jake, but we promise to play our best.

Ethan Dickey should be OK. He had a severe stinger in his shoulder that should heal up quickly. We're happy that he is not lost for the season.

Here are the highlights below. As usual, the stats are updated on the right hand side. See you all at practice on Monday. Time to prepare for a very good Olympus team.

Kearns 41, Copper Hills 0

What a great way to get that two game losing streak over with; with a dominating win over copper hills. Very proud of us playing such a complete game. Even without Copper Hills turnovers, I felt like we were playing at such a high level that nothing could have stopped us.

Keep working hard and preparing, one game at a time.

All game stats are updated on the right hand side.

Remember, PRACTICE IS NOW AT 5:30

Kearns vs Bingham highlights

I have to head out of town for work so I will not be at practice on Monday. Please give your fullest attention to coach Dave and the other coaches while at practice Monday and prepare for Copper Hills.

Here are the highlights from the game. The score did not indicate exactly how bad it was. They were definitely the better team, but we really beat ourselves with turnovers and missed assignments to make the score look so ugly. I truly hope for our team's sake this never happens again. Love you guys.

I will update the stats when I get back into town.

Offensive Review vs Riverton

Watch this video as many times as you can and learn from it. We need to get better mentally. We can and should play with every team, but we're making mental mistakes.

Come to practice prepared to get better and know what has been reviewed in this video.

Kearns 13, Riverton 19

Highlights from the Bantam's 13-19 loss to Riverton.

Stats are updated

Practice this week is Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday at Kearns High school. Be there early and come prepared to work.

Offensive review video will be posted later today.

Kearns offense vs Corner Canyon

Every player must take some time to watch this video regardless if you are in on offense or not, you must know what to do when you're in the game. There are still some basic assignments we're missing on our blocking that we need to shore up and some other things to learn regarding our mechanics as we do things (turning our hips on a block, QB's bringing the ball to their ear, RB's seeing the field better).

See you at practice at Thomas Jefferson on Wednesday night. Bring your game day clothes to practice.

Sunday, September 1, 2013

Kearns 27, Corner Canyon 6

What a tough, tough game. The score doesn't indicate what a tough team they were. We played mostly great on Defense and played lights out on offense in the 2nd half.

There are still many things that need to be fixed regarding both sides of the ball so watch for the instructional video for offense in the next day or so. Please come to practice on Wednesday at Thomas Jefferson ready to learn because we'll be having a short week to get a lot done.

Riverton runs the Wing-t offense which is based on deception. We will have to play very disciplined on Defense. Their defense is much like Corner Canyon's, except they actually have X men on their line. They're fast and fly to the ball.

Enjoy this win, but just like every week, we have another opponent coming up that wants to beat you guys, so you'll have to work hard both Physically and Mentally.

Remember to get your school work done and bet at practice ON TIME (10 minutes to 6). See you all on Wednesday.

All stats are updated on the link on the right side of this page.

Offense vs Bingham A2

Here is the break down of our offensive performance against Bingham A2. Still plenty of things we need to fix, but we're definitely getting better guys.

Everyone must watch this video and pay attention to their position, even if they're not in the game.

Sunday, August 25, 2013

Kearns 28, Bingham A2 0

Great win over a good team. We still have a lot to work on, but there is plenty to be proud of. Stats will be updated shortly and Offensive critique will be posted soon. See you all at practice at Kearns HS at 6pm. We have a TOUGH Corner Canyon team we're playing this week.
